Open and arthroscopic surgical management of primary synovial chondromatosis of the hip.

چکیده
BACKGROUND Primary synovial chondromatosis commonly involves large joints such as the knee and hip. The optimal approaches for successful surgical management of symptomatic primary synovial chondromatosis of the hip joint are controversial. METHODS The current study reviewed 9 patients with primary synovial chondromatosis of the hip who underwent surgical treatment between 2000 and 2005. By identification of the surgical indications, we chose the optimal surgical approach, open arthrotomy or arthroscopic surgery, for a definite treatment. RESULTS Of the 9 patients, 4 underwent open arthrotomy and 5 underwent hip arthroscopic surgery. The mean follow-up duration was 24.9 months (range, 12-50). There were no perioperative or postoperative complications. There was 1 recurrence 2 years after the first arthroscopic surgery. All hips remained in stationary condition on radiological follow-up except for 1 hip, the recurrence case. The mean Harris Hip Score at the 12-month follow-up was 93.7 (range, 90-99). CONCLUSIONS Surgical treatment for primary synovial chondromatosis of the hip proved beneficial for these patients. By means of identified indications, selecting an appropriate surgical approach provides a rapid recovery and low incidence of recurrence.

Arthroscopic treatment of synovial chondromatosis of the shoulder joint: case report and review
Abstract Two cases (20 and 15 years old) of shoulder joint synovial chondromatosis were initially treated with arthroscopic debridement. One was further treated with a second arthroscopy and partial synovectomy (case 1) the second was fully treated by arthroscopic surgery (case 2). The postoperative control X- ray revealed no loose body and the joint was normal. One of the cases (case 1) was a...

Between 1985 and 2000, 120 patients underwent arthroscopic management for primary synovial chondromatosis of the hip. We report the outcome of 111 patients with a mean follow-up of 78.6 months (12 to 196). More than one arthroscopy was required in 23 patients (20.7%), and 42 patients (37.8%) went on to require open surgery. Outcomes were evaluated in greater detail in 69 patients (62.2%) treate...
متن کاملArthroscopic surgery for synovial chondromatosis of the hip: a systematic review of rates and predisposing factors for recurrence.
PURPOSE Synovial chondromatosis of the hip is a benign condition whereby pain and functional limitations occur due to numerous intra-articular osteochondral fragments produced by a metaplastic synovium. Recurrence not only worsens morbidity but may lead to malignant transformation. With reported recurrence rates as high as 22% by open surgical approaches and given the increasing use of hip arth...
متن کاملSynovial chondromatosis of the hip: management with arthroscope-assisted synovectomy and removal of loose bodies: report of two cases.
Primary synovial chondromatosis is an uncommon disorder, and involvement of the hip joint is rare. The clinical symptoms are usually non-specific, and a clinical diagnosis of synovial chondromatosis of the hip may be difficult and delayed, especially before the ossifying nodules become evident. Loose bodies in the joint can cause secondary degenerative osteoarthritis of the hip. Currently, the ...
متن کاملReverse Total Shoulder Arthroplasty for the Treatment Of Synovial Chondromatosis: A Case Report and Review of the Literature
Synovial chondromatosis affecting the glenohumeral joint is rare. Treatment primarily consists of arthroscopic loose body removal and synovectomy. Shoulder arthroplasty has been mentioned in the literature as a treatment option for patients with coexisting arthritis, although the results have been underreported. The case of an 84-year-old man with long standing synovial chondromatosis of the sh...
